canl-c does not compile with openssl 1.1.0, as reported to Debian BTS:

Debian just increased the severity of the bug in BTS so it is now release critical. If not fixed before 2016-11-10, the package - and those depending on it - will be removed.

Daniel made the changes on openssl_1.1 branch. It may need more cleanups, but all look OK and testsuite works.

But there are troubles with mod_gridsite yet: mod_ssl is still using openssl 1.0.2 in Debian sid, which will conflict with new canl-c and new gridsite. I guess it may be needed to keep the current canl-c for now (or use compat package)?

Are there recommendation for versioning? We're going to increase at least minor version of canl-c for openssl 1.1 branch (2.2.x), so we could release both branches.

Due to the versioning: If we wanted parallel installation, changing major version would be needed (to have different library SONAME). I'm not sure if this is really needed, but it could ease the transition process to openssl 1.1.

We bumped the major version number. Original openssl 1.0 code is on branch_2_1 (version 2.1.x), openssl 1.1 on master branch (version 3.x.x).

The httpd package (i.e. apache) in Fedora rawhide is now built with OpenSSL 1.1, so maybe it is time to update canl-c in Fedora rawhide.
