typeDefs seem to be required for Apollo now?

I was following this tutorial https://typegraphql.com/docs/bootstrap.html but I could only get the version that uses typeDefs to work, ie, this no longer seems to work:

const schema = await buildSchema({
    resolvers: [
      UserResolver
    ],
});
const server = new ApolloServer({ schema });

edit: It gives me the duplicate graphql in some magical realm error or something to that effect.

No, apollo works with schema. The error is unrelated to that, just masked by typedefs
