Keyboard Shortcuts or Formatting Toolbar

I noticed that there are no shortcuts, like Ctrl+B or Ctrl+I, for common formatting. I know it's just markdown, but I have a hard time counting my asterisks on either end of a word I want bold and italicized, or the number of # I need for a heading.

Is there any way we could get keyboard shortcuts for those common formatting features, or a toolbar for many of the formatting features (like headings and bullet points)? I think that would make this software much more intuitive for most people!
