Describe the bug

Since Windows 11 24h2 August update openshell will no longer backup.
When you choose save to xml openshell stalls for a minute sometimes longer.
Then File explore type window opens and all the icons or blank.
My last successful back was on August 6th.
I support a large group of computers and they are all experiencing the same issue.

Select Backup
Select Save to xml file

I can replicate the issue on 25H2 as well.

It seems there is a problem with any file picker dialog (GetSaveFileName / GetOpenFileName) displayed from Open-Shell settings :(

Looks like the message loop for those dialogs is somehow stuck. But messages seem to get handled at some points, for example when I press Start button, the dialog shows up but then gets stuck again.

That is most likely because Classic Explorer settings are separate application.
Open-Shell Start menu settings dialog is invoked from Explorer process directly.

Also I have noted that you are on some Insider build (26120).
I was unable to replicate the issue on official 24H2.

So it may be something that MS will fix in some update (hopefully).

Yes I'm on insider build in Beta program. I run this almost all the time.
I support 100's of computers for clients and they are not on beta, everyone on windows 11 24H2 with Aug 2025 updates installed have the same issue as i reported.

That's because last official update for 24H2 is 26100.4946.

26100.5074 that most likely introduces the issue is still in preview (it is installed only if user has Get latest updates as soon as they are available enabled).

Correct I verified your version n build, I had 1 client that did not update yet.
Its work okay, but now you are aware moving forward it will fail..

26100.5074 that most likely introduces the issue is still in preview (it is installed only if user has Get latest updates as soon as they are available enabled).

I should disable that setting then. I wasn't aware it updates with Previews, I thought it was just update ASAP when a new update releases. Stupid M$.

Yup, that's because MS already released the problematic update to everyone.

Prior to 25H2 the issue changed where explorer no longer crashes but backup still fails.
Looks like with 25H2 the backup still does not work..
Several other bugs seem to be fixed in Windows 25H2 outside of Open-Shell.
Hope they will fix this bug as well.
