Use mounted Thor LEDs with integrated lens and iris as Tilly did. 

We can buy white LEDs at 150 GBP or use existing colored ones that are doing nothing in the cupboard. 
We either need a good design that is easy to work with and explain (cage) or pre-build the cage and get students to move the parts to adjust. <-- best idea most likely.
