Improve template preformance

According to PageSpeed Insights and subjective measures, there are some performance issues with the template that should be addressed. This is intended to be a tracking tasks for changes that are made to allow roll-backs to be done easier as needed.

A degree of caching would help improve things as well, but this appears to be a current limitation of GitHub.io.
