How to create a new tag?

There doesn't seem to be much documentation about how to create a new tag, like the helper functions and stuff. Looking at the existing tags can also be confusing because they all seem to be implemented in different ways (probably different requirements, no two tags are the same).

Since there isn't really a standardized path to follow, it's difficult to infer what these new tags should be doing in their code.

Hopefully @justinbmeyer can help me implement one or both of these new tags in the future.
