MySQL instructions don't work

I have never used mySQL before and i'm on ubuntu. i have struggled for 30m to 1h to get this working and i keep getting stupid errors related to not being able to connect to the local db.

this example really shouldn't be using a backend at all, it should be mocked out! ug.

if you have phpMyAdmin enabled you can just use that, copy paste the script into the SQL and run it.
