Howdy @white-gecko, thanks for taking the time to look into this fork, which, by the way, I haven't touched in a while now! I could make a PR, but I think I'd be introducing bugs upstream (#1, #2 & #3).

I see you've create a draft PR which uses an even more recent version of python plus some other enhancements, perhaps your PR would suffice? You could adapt certain elements from this fork that are working without issues.
