subpage.title not returning value

Hi! Thanks for this plugin.

I'm trying to make a simple linkable dynamic list of a folders content, to embed in a page. I'm trying this script:

<ul>
{% for subpage in page.children %}
    <li><a href="{{ subpage.file.name }}/">{{ subpage.title or subpage.file.name }}</a></li>
{% endfor %}
</ul>

But the list only displays the subpage file name, not the title. Using frontmatter

---
title: mypagetitle
---

didn't make a difference from simply starting the .md with # mypagetitle .

I also tried different variants of child.page, but that didn't work either.

I'm quite sure I'm in the wrong here, and it might be wrong of me to use the "issues" feature. If so, I apologize.. how can I get the subpage title?

If you want to use the title, you might use the meta.title attribute:

<ul>
  {% for subpage in page.children %}
    <li><a href="{{ subpage.file.name }}/">{{ subpage.meta.title or subpage.file.name }}</a></li>
  {% endfor %}
</ul>

meta allows you access explicitly what is in the frontmatter.

Amazing! Thank you for the quick reply. The answer was easier than expected. I tried three different AI tools, and none of the came up with this solution. Glad human interaction still is worth something.

I did use Copilot, but I oriented it, with meta. 🙂

But shoot.. it didn't work. The script still fetches the file name, and not the title?

If you have this: {{ subpage.meta.title or subpage.file.name }} it means there is no title in the frontmatter for that specific page?

You would have to specify a title for each page in the frontmatter... Perhaps not ideal, but it would give you good control?

I did specify in frontmatter using title, but it still doesn't work. Strange, it works in the navigation menu, which returns the titles, rather than the filename. If you see this screenshot - you can see that the (silly) frontmatter title is present in the menu, while the page list shows the filename..

Can this be caused by some of the other plugins?? I'm using:

• awesome-pages
• section-index
• macros
• search
