Python Hanging Issue

Hello,

I have successfully installed tempest GR modules, but when trying to execute the examples (with downloaded files) I get the UI and viewing windows to appear, but Python hangs and I receive force close / wait dialog. Does not recover no matter how long I wait. Any recommendations how to solve?

Ubuntu 22.04, Python 3.12.3, GR 3.10.

Is this something that happens with the SDL Video alone? Make a new flowgraph with a DSL Video feeding it with noise and see if it works.

I also encountered this problem. This problem seems to happen if I installed GNURadio by RadioConda. I still haven't solved the problem.

I installed gnu radio companion 3.10.9.2 with Python 3.12.3 on ubuntu 24.04.1.
When I try to compile gr-tempet it doesn't work. A dialog box appears " PYTHON V.3.12 is not responding".
I tried to create a new project with SDL Video alone using a noise module as input but a the same dialog box appaires.
How can I fix the problem? Seams SDL video module doesn't function.
XieyangSun, have you fixed the problem?
Which software configuration do you use?

The alternative to using SDL Video I found is to use ffplay instead. The signal that goes to the SDL Video should instead go to a "File Sink". The file should have been created beforehand through a named pipe by
mkfifo video.raw

Creating it beforehand as a named pipe will avoid creating a huge file with the video.

After running the flowgraph, you will notice that it is "frozen". It's waiting for someone to read from the pipe. You should then simply execute:
ffplay -f rawvideo -pixel_format gray -video_size <width>x<height> -i video.raw

where <width> and <height> are the values you use to configure the SDL Video (Input width and height). Note that you will see everything with a weird aspect ratio. It should be possible to correct this problem, but I haven't had to time to check it out.

Note that this is a problem with Ubuntu 24.04. It should work fine in other versions of the OS (and I guess it should eventually be fixed in the newest Ubuntu).

Hi @M1KE1980 . I noticed that the project author mentioned that ffplay could be used to solve the problem of 'Python not responding', but I didn't try it.

I later successfully compiled and run gr-tempest using an operating system called DragonOS FocalX (which is based on Lubuntu22.04 or 20.04), here is the download link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dragonos-focal/.

This system solves a number of radio hardware and software related environmental dependencies, with many wireless- and SDR-related software (such as TempestSDR) built in. gr-tempest can be compile and run on this system without encountering python not responding issues.

I also noticed that the authors of DragonOS FocalX also posted a video about how to user gr-tempest 4 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU-IVkUOt0E. Of course, the README for gr-tempest has changed, and you just need to follow the current compilation process.
