Modify top bar properties via Python

Is it possible to change any of the top bar item values in Python, similar to ipywidgets?
If not I think it would be a very useful addition, though the only way I know of to communicate between python and javascript in Jupyter Lab would be through ipywidgets

Indeed ipywidgets sounds like the way to do this. Maybe something like ipylab could do the trick: https://github.com/jtpio/ipylab

Changing the top bar items from Python would probably depend on what the extension does and we would need to have a way to access these elements (settings could be a way: jtpio/ipylab#27). But it sounds like it should be possible to use ipylab to add widgets to the top bar.
