After gaining experience with schema versioning, we concluded that it should be based on semantic versioning principles (https://semver.org). It is also important to ensure that all documents are compatible with the latest schema version. Since schema registration lacks this functionality and version management is not one of MetaStore's areas of expertise, we decided that a corresponding service (e.g., GitHub or GitLab) should handle versioning. For GitHub, there will be actions that support the schema creator in versioning according to the Semantic Versioning guidelines. Furthermore, when the major version changes, a specification must transfer documents according to the previous schema to the new schema. Additionally, scientists can opt to specify a mapping for the Elasticsearch search to adapt it to their needs.
