tool-pyocd fails to fully install itself

Reproduction:

1. Clean PlatformIO folder (rm -rf ~/.platformio/packages/*)
2. Create new project for lpc1768 with baremetal mbed config (from https://github.com/platformio/platform-nxplpc/tree/develop/examples/mbed-rtos-blink-baremetal)
3. Hit "Debug"

When forcing it to a higher version with

platform_packages =

in the platformio.ini, it seems to install itself, even though it complains that pyocd-gdbserver is deprecated then.

Forgot to mention, VSC is now showing the debug controls (pauze/stop/restart).

pyOCD can clearly connect via the CMSIS-DAP to the Cortex-M3 core, flash the microcontroller and even halt the microcontroller. That all looks very good up until pyOCD says it didn't receive an ACK from the gdb client?

Not sure why it says Installing Python dependencies for pyOCD... twice though after it has already done that. It does not do that for me. Does it maybe work when you start it a second time, or is the exact same failure repeated?

Another thing to try would be with different toolchain versions and thus gdb versions. E.g.,

Mhm. I guess something you can try is adding

You first start up pyocd-gdbserver in the terminal, then you start debugging in VSCode. It should connect to the opened pyOCD instance. Is the error still the same?

Maybe adding -d debug to the PyOCD invocation will print more relevant error info?

Okay, I have a feeling pyOCD won't be much help here. Let's try OpenOCD. In the PlatformIO Core CLI (link above) can you do

pio pkg install -g -t tool-openocd

Then, stop any open pyOCD terminal (Ctrl+C), open a new clean terminal and execute

"C:\Users\Wim van der Vegt\.platformio\packages\tool-openocd\bin\openocd.exe" -f board/mbed-lpc1768.cfg 

Can OpenOCD connect to the board? Can VSCode connect to OpenOCD when you hit "debug" again?
