Extension not loaded in Chromium version 116

web-ext is not loading the extension in Chrome version 116.
I suspect this has to do with restricting the use of the --load-extension flag. See the release notes for more details.

I have opened an issue in the web-ext repo: mozilla/web-ext#2847
