Why do i need a "delete all" button?

Seems so "Inspector Gadget"(an old TV cartoon) to me.

If its for user to move on to another task, clear and restart, maybe place old matter into archives (groupings of historic objects, not "compressed"), but i don't mind just placing the items into categories.
