Description
Describe the bug
After creating the empty debian with debootstrap as shown in the docs here, trying to invoke the command
systemd-nspawn -M debian-custom -D /data/custom/machines/debian-custom
throws the following error:
Press ^] three times within 1s to kill container.
systemd 258~rc3-1 running in system mode (+PAM +AUDIT +SELINUX +APPARMOR +IMA +IPE +SMACK +SECCOMP +GCRYPT -GNUTLS +OPENSSL +ACL +BLKID +CURL +ELFUTILS +FIDO2 +IDN2 -IDN +IPTC +KMOD +LIBCRYPTSETUP +LIBCRYPTSETUP_PLUGINS +LIBFDISK +PCRE2 +PWQUALITY +P11KIT +QRENCODE +TPM2 +BZIP2 +LZ4 +XZ +ZLIB +ZSTD +BPF_FRAMEWORK +BTF -XKBCOMMON -UTMP +SYSVINIT +LIBARCHIVE)
Detected virtualization systemd-nspawn.
Detected architecture arm64.
Warning! Reported kernel version 4.19.152-ui-alpine is older than systemd's required baseline kernel version 5.7. Your mileage may vary.
Found tmpfs on /sys/fs/cgroup/, assuming legacy hierarchy.
Detected cgroup v1 hierarchy at /sys/fs/cgroup/, which is no longer supported by current version of systemd.
Please instruct your initrd to mount cgroup v2 (unified) hierarchy,
possibly by removing any stale kernel command line options, such as:
systemd.legacy_systemd_cgroup_controller=1
systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=0
[!!!!!!] Detected unsupported legacy cgroup hierarchy, refusing execution.

Container debian-custom failed with error code 255.
I am a complete noob at how the UDM Firmware works and what first comes to mind would be to update the kernel or downgrade systemd (I have already checked for the stale kernel command line options but those are empty), but really don't want to break anything in my setup. Any assistance will be appreciated, it's probably a version incompatibility but what can I change without breaking something?
To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Follow guideline here until step 1.2; step 1.3 fails
Expected behavior
systemd-nspawn starts up the bootstrapped debian in a container.
UDM Information
- Variant Dream Machine Pro
- Firmware Version: 4.3.6
