Looks good to me but I'm not sure about the pytest stuff. There aren't any tests included in this package (yet)!

Good point. The idea is that the pytest tooling is a standard addition to a package's pyproject.toml whether or not it has a ./tests subdirectory. Among other things it means developers will be able to add tests out-of-the-box without any additional work needed.
