10/08/2017 Meeting notes:

General discussion on technical issues and data analysis

Issues:

  • Currently a booting problem with E1 PC. Now solved by Tom: do not boot PC with external hard drive(s) attached with USB; for some reason this is confusing the boot up. We have has USB issues with this PC in the past. There were USB issues with the sister PC on c-floor, solved by a windows upgrade - possibly the same issue.

Discussion Topics:

  • How should we visualise the strain distribution? if log-log plots we should have the strain value bins distributed equally; at present the number of bins is biased towards higher strains and most of our strain values are in the low strain regime. This is especially pertinent in low strain 90-100% yield and fatigue experiments.
  • 16th European Mechanics of Materials Conference in Nantes, France. Deadline for abstract submission is 30th September 2017. We should decide at next meeting who wishes to go and what they will present
  • Cleaning gold-coated samples: is this possible? Claudius has tried some wiping with ethanol and got some gold removal but not excessive. David Lunt to experiment further
  • Etching before remodelling: has anyone tried this? David Lunt has seen differences in gold pattern between $\alpha$ and $\beta$ phases in Ti, likely due to OPS-induced etching. This can be useful to distinguish between phases but we are unsure as to the effect that any etching-induced topography may have on the development of strain localisation at the surface

Actions:

  • Everyone:
  • Michael Atkinson:
    • talk next time about Kernel Density Estimation as an alternative to histograms
    • put paper on wiki that describes the standard form of the normalised misorientation distribution curve
  • David Lunt:
    • put paper on wiki that describes the method for strain direction determination from hrdic data
  • Rhys:
    • talk next time about the method for strain direction determination from hrdic data

08/06/2017 Meeting notes:

General discussion ranging from software issues to presenting at TMS. details below.

Discussion Topics:

  • Decision made that we have enough licences for DaVis for now; it is only rarely that we experience access issues. However, we must stress the importance of properly closing the DaVis software when we are not using it
  • To be included on the website: blogs, links to social media, stories, visitors, conferences, generally showing activity
  • TMS 2018 attendees:
    • Michael Atkinson (in situ reverse loading)
    • Alberto (invited)
    • Claudius (insitu HRDIC, cold creep)

General Actions:

  • We need to understand why our resolution is so good. We can test this by analysing different algorithms within DaVis
  • Make code dataAnalysisUtilities open source. Needs the following:
    • additions from other users
    • name for the code
    • structure: function names, purpose, unit tests, use right convention for function naming
    • packaging

Specific Actions:

  • All:
    • Add one (or more!) items to the social media part of the wiki.
    • Start contributing to the code by committing new functions to our own branches of the master
  • Lara Debenham:
    • Set up social media structure - instagram, twitter, facebook (?), ready for addition of items from specific action #1
  • João QD Fonseca:
    • Investigate website linked to GitHub via Jekyll
  • Michael Atkinson:
    • chase up re-focussing issue in mapping with AZTEC
  • David Lunt:
    • chase up large displacement issues with DaVis
  • Rhys Thomas:
    • put SDD onto E1 PC
    • reinstall windows on E1 PC to solve USB issues
  • Allan Harte
    • Create 'issues' section on the wiki for, especially, software issues to chase with developers
    • Speak to Michael Faulkner about MAPS brightness issues
    • Look into Pt Deposition in the FIB for small region hrdic - good for not needing to heat up samples

02/03/2017 Meeting notes:

Informal discussion on current issues and upcoming events.

General Actions:

  • Work towards combining Zenodo - digital identifier (doi) - with Jupiter notebook and GitHub when publishing
  • Keep up-to-date with publications from the Santa Barbara group, who use the speckle technique of gold deposition from solution

Specific Actions:

  • João:
    • We need to create a way of saving all data and making it accessible; investigate university cloud storage for data
    • Write code to do the hexagonal-to-orthonormal conversion
    • Prepare talk on mechanics and kinematics to give at a future HRDIC meeting
  • Michael:
    • Prepare a talk on crystallography
  • Allan:
    • Create Slack group for HRDIC members
    • Apply to EMAG conference (Manchester) relating HRDCI, EBSD and ECCI
  • Alberto:
    • Upload slides on the way in which different EBSD systems define external coordinates
  • David:
    • Look into presenting at British society for strain measurement conference (Sheffield)

09/02/2017 Meeting notes:

  • Short discussion about the EBSD-DIC approach. In next meeting Michael Atkinson will go through the script and how to use it
  • Jack suggested to block 2-days slots instead of one full week. The 5kN unit could be tested in March.
  • Quanta vibrations to be fixed before in-situ tests

##26/01/2017 Meeting notes:

  • Rhys to create skeleton pages
  • Joao to contact Software engineering and arrange github training
