For extra context on the switch to shader, here's the commit message from Essential's color picker:

Significantly reduces the amount of quads drawn from one per MC pixel to
just a single one, also fixes broken result on some resolutions caused
by incorrect rounding (1.33 - 0.33 may be 0.99 which should round to 1
but toInt usedd here gives 0).
